STEP 1
Measure your kitchen
You can either measure your own kitchen or get a professional to do it. In our case, we used the later. If you are planning to measure yourself, make sure you take into account the position of your plug point, sink pipe, windows, door, kitchen's light position, height from floor to ceiling or floor to window. Basically, everything that your eyes can see, measure it. And be extremely precise. Or go to Ikea at the customer service section and ask for the person in charge of measuring the kitchen. They'll bring you to the right person. For the measuring service, depends on where you live, a certain amount of charges will be imposed. The nearer your location to Ikea the cheaper. Ours was around RM100+ but it was worth the money because their measurement is extremely precise. They'll come to your place, measure your kitchen and the measurement will be given to you on the spot. We definitely recommend you to use the professional service. You can also keep the measurement for future reference even if you don't feel like using Ikea kitchen.
STEP 2
Design your kitchen
Once you got your measurement, go to IKEA Home Planner, enter the measurement of your kitchen, and start planning the design of your kitchen cabinet. Don't worry about not knowing how to use the planner. Just play around with it. You'll get the hang of it pretty fast. It's very fun to see your dream kitchen coming to life. After you are done designing your dream kitchen, save it and click on the Item List / Total Price button to view exactly what the button says. From there, adjust your design to fit your budget. The materials chosen play an important role in determining the price. Choose wisely. We took the cheapest material but overall we are very pleased with everything. Read here for more details on the guarantees/warranty. The total price of the kitchen does not include the delivery price and the installation price.
STEP 2.1
Or set an appointment
If you are not feeling that creative and clueless about designing your kitchen, alternatively you can book a kitchen planning appointment with Ikea's designer here. Make sure you already have the correct measurement of your kitchen. Once you arrived at Ikea, go straight to the information counter at the kitchen section (Yes you have to walk through the showrooms), inform the staff there that you've set an appointment. They will entertain you and advise you on the best design that fits your kitchen to maximize the functionality. Don't hesitate to ask the staff to redesign a few elements according to your budget cap and make sure the final design function for you as the main user of the kitchen. Even if you've designed your kitchen in advance yourself, just book an appointment with Ikea's designer for them to run through your design and make few alterations. The service provided by Ikea's designer is absolutely FREE! So make use of that appointment. Just be mindful of the people around you who are waiting for their appointment too.
STEP 3
Get the invoice
During the appointment, your kitchen design will be finalized. From there, you'll be able to see the final price. If you are happy with it, the staff will print out the invoice and check if all items to build your kitchen are available. There might be a huge chance that some of the items are not available at the Ikea branch where you at. If that's the case, you can either get the out of stock items from other Ikea branch. What we did - we waited for all items to be in stock. Keep the invoice, and ask the staff when will the stock be in. Constantly check at the Ikea website if the items are already in stock. Once everything is in stock, bring your printed invoice & design back to the information counter at the kitchen section (no appointment needed) for one last check on the items. The delivery date can also be set here if you are not buying other items from other sections. The delivery fee will be included in the invoice as well.
STEP 4
Make payment
If all items are in stock, go to the payment counter with the finalized invoice and make your payment. There's an installment option but we opt to pay in full. Please ask the cashier in detail about the installment option if you are curious about it. Payment can be made by cash, credit, or debit. For items to be delivered at your doorstep, bring the invoice with receipt of payment to the delivery counter and set the delivery date. The delivery charges depend on where you live. For the Cyberjaya area, the delivery fee is around RM90+ and it can go up to RM200+ the further you are from the store. Of course, if you have your own transportation, you can bring everything back to save some moolah. For more details of the delivery fee, read more here.
STEP 5
Installation service
Like any other Ikea's product, everything is designed for you to DIY it. Should you wish to assemble it yourself, you can save a chunk of money here. Be mentally and physically prepared for it. Skills & interest play an important role as well to ensure that the finishing is at par. But if you don't have the time, skill, and strength to do it everything yourself. Ikea provides an installation service to put your mind and body at ease. Again, depending on your kitchen design, the installation fee will vary. They charge around RM85/metre and the fee will go up from there. Our installation service cost around 1k+ including sink installation. The installation fee is not included in the invoice. Meaning after you've set your delivery date, go to the installation office next to it, and pay separately. The person in charge will explain to you in detail the type of installation required for your kitchen. To date, we are very happy with the end result and the installation took around 1 and a half-day for it to be completed.

Total spent
A total of RM 5k+ was spent including the kitchen sink and tap which we bought from a different store to save cost. Ikea's sink is quite expensive even for a small size sink .

Kitchen
appliances
Prepare for some extra money to buy appliances like the stove, hob, and oven. These items can be installed by Ikea installation service as well
Duration
All in all, it took us around 3 months to finally get our kitchen installed. Why? Because of the items availability. We waited for all items to be in stock before we make our payment because want to minimise trips to Ikea and include everything into 1 delivery.

Is it cheap?
Well, depends. For our kitchen, the typical cabinet shop quoted us close to RM9k for a simpler design which doesn't include the wall unit. Ikea to us is cheaper but you have to manage everything yourself from A-Z.
